A Little About Me

A Selfie:
Me in my natural habitat (being smashed by my 75lb border collie)
Favorites:
Food:
My comfort food is a bowl of sweet potato cubes, quinoa, feta, cauliflower, and cajun spices. I could honestly eat only that for the rest of my life. I also have a pretty significant soft spot for chili cheese fries and pierogies. If either of those are on the menu, it's going to be pretty hard for me to say no. We've also been using Hello Fresh lately, and I have been exposed to so many vegetables that I never thought I could have a positive relationship with.

Drink:
I enjoy a basic Very Berry Hibiscus refresher at Starbucks with light ice and no blackberries and a splash of green tea, white tea, black tea, and passion tea. I also only order this drink on the app because I'm too ashamed to say all of those modifications out loud to a barista. A close second is a half and half tea from McAllister's, but that's mostly because they have the best cups for water later. They're so firm!
Book:
Tough, tough, tough. (Sidenote: when you type that three times, it no longer looks like a word)
I have read The Knight and the Dove by Lori Wick at least 400 times, so I guess that's probably my favorite. However, Daniel Quinn's Ishmael completely blew my mind and changed my entire perception of how the world works, so thanks for making me read that junior year, Frau Gogel.
Song:
"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship. I cannot resist singing at the top of my lungs and gesticulating dramatically anytime it plays within earshot.
Movie:
Too hard. I'll list my Top 5, I will watch this every time it's on, movies -
    1. The Last of the Mohicans
    2. Sweet Home Alabama
    3. Dances With Wolves
    4. Fantasia 2000
    5. Pride and Prejudice
Show:
Also too hard-
     1. Veronica Mars
     2. New Girl
     3. Game of Thrones
     4. Psych
     5. CSI:NY

Band:
Coldplay, hands down. I finally got to see them in concert last year for my birthday after about 13 years of waiting, and it. was. awesome.
Solo Artist:
Vance Joy - I haven't found a song of his that I didn't like. I also think Imogen Heap, Iron & Wine, and Bon Iver are amazing and super talented.
Place:
I LOVE TO TRAVEL. I have way too many favorite places, so I'm going to have to break this one down:

  • Favorite International City: London, UK
  • Favorite Domestic City: Boston, MA
  • Favorite Place to Relax: Smoky Mountains or on the highest deck of a cruise ship
  • Favorite Vacation Spot: Disneyland or Disney World
Subject:
I am an English teacher and am currently getting a Masters of English, so I guess I like that subject. I didn't love English until I was a junior in high school though. I've always loved Science and History classes, and I definitely had the most fun teaching 8th grade U.S. History.
Sport:
I've never played sports, except a few pick up games of soccer, but I love watching professional hockey and soccer. I don't have cable, so I struggle to keep up with specific soccer clubs, but I always cheer for Germany in the World Cup. I grew up in a household that loved the Rangers, so that's always been my hockey team.
Source: Man of Steel
Male actor:
Kevin Costner - He's just the coolest.

If you try to tell me that you didn't cry during this scene, I'll laugh and call you a liar.

Female actor:
Kristen Bell - I think she is so so funny, and I love how she celebrates vulnerability, whether it's in marriage, being a mom, or mental health. Also, her latest movie, Like Father, is a beautiful story about forgiveness, and you should go watch it. (Warning: profanities abound, so watch out for that)
Life:
Schooling:
I'm a glutton for punishment. I have been in school now for 20 years of my life. After high school, I went to the University of Evansville for a bachelors in Secondary English Education. I had to take a year off and get a year of teaching experience before I was able to enroll at Indiana Wesleyan University to get my Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I then immediately enrolled at the University of Southern Indiana to get a Masters of English. I should be finished with that degree next summer or fall. Sometime I'll write a post about what I plan to do with all of these degrees and if there is any schooling in the future, mostly to help myself organize my thoughts on the matter because currently, I'm not totally sure!
Political ideology:
George Washington warned us about political parties and the two-party system (History teacher, sorry), and I am firmly in his camp. I don't believe in voting if I don't know what candidates stand for as individuals. Following a simple label of "Republican" or "Democrat" does not cover that for me.

P.S. read Shane Claiborne's Jesus for President
Religion:
I was raised in the Wesleyan Church, one of the holiness denominations descended from John Wesley. It's pretty similar to Methodists and Nazarenes. I go to a non-denominational Protestant church now, but I honestly think religious denominations are like political parties. If you get too caught up in the label and don't actually understand what YOU believe, that's typically a problem.
Tattoos:
Yes, left forearm

Piercings:
I've always talked about getting my ears pierced, but here I am, almost 27, and no piercings. Is it weird that I got a tattoo before I pierced my ears? I think I'm irrationally afraid of infections or having my earring ripped out.
Languages:
English. I can say I speak Spanish and embarrass myself, but I did take six years of Spanish classes. I can read quite a bit of Spanish, but I get lost in pronunciation.
Reason behind your blog’s name:
I'll probably expand on this in another post, but "Well, that's how it all happened my baby" was the last line of the letter my dad wrote me after I was born. He wrote an incredibly detailed account of my birth, mainly focusing on how bananas it ended up being when I tried to come out butt-first. That line has always stood out to me as a reminder that life is going to happen no matter what, and more often than not, it's probably not going to go the way you had planned. I am a super control freak when it comes to planning my life, so it's a good reminder.
Why you blog:
I have a lot of thoughts rolling around in my head, and I don't think it's a benefit to blow up people's Facebook or Twitter feeds with nuggets of information. If you want to see what I'm thinking, I'll be here.
It's also an attempt to force myself to write more often. I still don't post as much as I should, but the guilt of remembering that I haven't posted in awhile keeps me coming back.

Told you I'd forget to write...

Well, it's been a couple of months! I really got off to this blogging thing with a great start. 😅

This has been one of the busiest summers of my life. If I'm making excuses, I would definitely say I've had plenty of distractions to keep me from writing:

  • two classes for my Masters of English
  • trip to Chicago with Andy
  • trip to Washington D.C. and NYC with my eighth graders
  • trip to Boston with my cousin Seth
  • trip to Orlando for a work conference (and of course Disney was involved)
  • work meetings
  • family reunion
  • tutoring at an ACT/SAT prep center
  • wrecked/totaled car
  • bought new car
  • two 20+ page papers
  • youth group events
  • weekends traveling to see friends
  • etc. etc. etc.
Now that the list is put into words, I'm a little shocked at how much I did. I love traveling and staying busy, but this was TOO MUCH. How could I possibly expect to function, to stay grounded and connected, when I filled my time to this extreme?

Where does this drive come from to always have to be doing something?

The school year starts again next week. At one of our leadership meetings, my principal asked what we did this summer to rejuvenate. In that moment, I felt as though I had crashed into a wall. What did I do to rejuvenate? Everything I did was go, go go.

It was a sobering moment.

Despite my life seeming to pick up with going back to work, starting after school programs, running meetings, teaching two classes, taking one Masters class, working in the office, etc., I am honestly glad to get back into a routine.

My goals for the 2018-2019 school year:
  • Spiritual growth
    • Read through the New Testament
    • Be intentional to not be religiously busy but spiritually present
  • Self-care
    • Take/MAKE time to exercise and strengthen my body
    • Read a couple of the books on my shelf that I enjoy and have been sitting there gathering dust since I impulsively bought them from Barnes & Noble
    • Get a haircut - it's been all summer, and this rats' nest is OFF THE CHAIN
    • Sit in my hammock
  • Be present
    • Take walks with Andy before work
    • Make Saturday morning breakfast a priority
    • Fold & PUT AWAY the laundry
    • Sit and talk to my grandparents
    • Spend more time with my in-laws
    • Get lunch with my mom more often
    • Eat more Mexican food with my aunt

That's a long list.

In order to accomplish any of those things, my main goal has to be to be LESS BUSY.

I need to slow down and savor my life.

After all, it is almost PSL time. What better time to be alive and curl up with a good book or go for a walk?

Beginnings

One of my professors last semester issued a challenge to our class: write.

Just. Write.

I have always struggled with sticking with things consistently, but writing has always been the one of the worst. Much to my embarrassment, I could probably fill a landfill on my own with all of the adorable journals and notebooks I've bought over the years in an attempt to dredge up some genius or inspiration.

When getting into the higher levels of academia, it just gets worse because you think all of your writing has to be some attempt to get published.

But her challenge made it evident that I just need to get over myself and have some fun with words.

Instead of hiding in a journal that will eventually get lost under my bed, I'm trying something new.

So here's to an attempt at forming a new habit while finding my voice.
